Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp softened butter

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water and sugar in a measuring cup; stir until dissolved. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and softened butter until crumbly. Add yeast mixture and stir to form a dough.
  3. Knead dough in the bowl for 8-10 minutes or use a stand mixer on medium speed for 5-7 minutes until sticky (avoid adding extra flour).
  4. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size (35 minutes for rapid rise yeast).
  5. Punch down the dough, divide into two equal parts, shape into loaves, and place in greased pans.
  6. Let rise again for 30-45 minutes until dough rises above pan edges.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake loaves for 25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool on wire racks for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
