  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 squirts green gel food coloring (or 1 Tbsp liquid)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • Black gel food coloring (for decoration)
  • Electric green gel food coloring (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, beat together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Gradually mix in the buttermilk, vegetable oil, green food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until combined.
  5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just mixed.
  6. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool completely before frosting with cream cheese buttercream made by beating together butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  8. Decorate with black and electric green gel food coloring as desired.
