  • 1/2 cup butter (salted or unsalted)
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 12 tsp red gel food coloring
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 & 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 3 tbsp butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Whisk in the egg, vanilla extract, vinegar, and red gel food coloring until well combined.
  4. Mix in flour, cocoa powder, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt until just incorporated. Reserve 1 tablespoon of dough for decorating the cookies.
  5. Scoop out nine equal cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet and flatten to about 1/2 inch thick. Bake for 10 minutes; let cool on the sheet for 10-15 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  6. Bake the reserved tablespoon of dough for an additional 7-8 minutes to crumble for decoration.
  7. Beat softened butter and cream cheese together until fluffy.
  8. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract; whip for 3-5 minutes until light and fluffy. Chill if needed to firm up.
  9. Pipe frosting onto cooled cookies and sprinkle with crushed cookie crumbs.
