  • 9 ounces black forest chicken ham, cut into strips
  • 8 ounces sliced Swiss cheese
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1½ cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • Chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick spray.
  2. Spread shredded chicken in the dish. Layer with ham strips and Swiss cheese slices.
  3. In a saucepan, melt 6 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Whisk in mustard, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, nutmeg, and cayenne.
  4. Stir in the flour to form a paste. Gradually add milk while whisking until smooth; simmer for about 4 minutes until thickened.
  5. Pour the sauce over the cheese layer evenly.
  6. In a small bowl, mix Panko breadcrumbs with remaining butter and spread over the casserole.
  7. Bake uncovered for 30-40 minutes until bubbly and golden brown on top. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
